A Good Day's Work.

A fabulous early morning walk today.  It was a little chilly to start off with, but soon warmed up.

Lots of steps up...

and up...

looking along one of the paths...I didn't go that way.

Looking back down.

A patchwork of fields.

I incorporated part a mix of new and known walks today and did a circular route which worked out at around 5 1/2 miles!  Oh and apparently 43 floors.

I spent the rest of the day in the garden, and for fun, I thought I would keep my phone on me to see how much 'mileage' I do in the garden.  Today it worked out at three miles and 32 floors!  Yes my garden is on a hill.

The orchard was starting to look quite long so needed to get out the strimmer and put it to work.

The grape vines were also looking rather overgrown too.

Starting to look better.

Tidier and easier to get up the rows now.

The strimmer unfortunately only reaches half the orchard, so I will have to probably cut the rest by hand, so that will be a slow job!

I mowed the bank behind the glass house

The little half circular grass area

and also mowed the main bank of the garden.

There is a bare patch where the previous owners kept their chickens.  I was going to re-grass this area, but have not seed so am thinking about making another vegetable ed, as although it looks sloped in this photo it is a relatively flat area.

You can see it is flatter in this photo and it is next to the main vegetable garden.

The blossom on the trees in the orchard is looking beautiful.

There are quite a variety of different fruit trees and apples, so am looking forward to seeing just what there is later on in the year.

The grape vines are starting to leaf as well.  Just a shame they are wine grapes and not eating grapes!

I tried to avoid cutting the violets in the orchard, but wasn't always successful.

I planted out five butternut squash today.

The peas are starting to appear!

The courgettes that I planted out the other day are looking good.

Salad greens are starting to grow in the raised bed by the garden shed.

Yippee!  My Dad's Dalmatian beans are starting to sprout too.  Really looking forward to these as they are delicious.

The potatoes I planted in the bags are starting to grow really well...just hoping I have enough compost left to keep topping the bags up as they grow taller.

My view from where I often sit with a cuppa and read my book.

A solitary bee went into this hole while I was sitting on my seat watching.

A pretty good industrious day.

I just need to work out how to put the new strimming cord in the strimmer now, as it ran out while I was doing the strimming.

  1. You appear to have a very large garden around your home. Do you mind if I ask how big it is? As you know, quarter-acre sections used to be common here but sadly most places are smaller than that now.

    1. Yes I remember when quarter acre sections were common. Our first house in Glenfield had a quarter acre section, now there are three houses on that property! So sad. Children no longer seem to play outside like they used to.

Our garden is half an acre, quite unusual for the UK, but perhaps not quite so unusual for the IOW.

    2. The first home we bought was also quarter acre, it was in Huntly. Half an acre is a great amount, as you can actually do a lot with it. Have fun :)

  2. Well that was a day and a half. I have a considerable envy of your garden and the things you can cultivate. We are at least four weeks behind you and possibly more this year because, as a friend observed on the phone this morning, we are about two weeks later this year than last year.

    1. I have been amazed by how well everything is growing down here. I think my busy day caught up with me though! But it felt good at the time to have achieved a lot.

  3. It's a great garden, plenty of space and more than enough to keep you busy. We're both very fortunate to have such lovely places to walk.

    1. Very fortunate! I moved just in the nick of time, it would have driven me crazy if I had been stuck in Hertfordshire.

  4. Looks like a very good walk, my knees don't like steps these days though, I hear them click.

  5. Goodness you have been busy and your garden is looking lovely. You're very lucky to be able to go on such a long walk and beautiful walk every day. Are the lock down rules the same on the IOW as on the mainland? xx

    1. Thank you, it is hard work with the garden, but keeps me busy and distracted from thinking too much. The lock down rules are the same, we are allowed out for daily exercise. I try to make sure I go out very early to avoid people...not always successful, do sometimes see early runners and cyclists but I make sure I leave a big distance between them when I can and also wear my mask. I need to go out walking everyday as it seems to help the nerve pain considerably. I don't go out any other time, no shopping etc...
