Friday

A quiet walk before lunch today.

Nature seen:

Cormorant

Bee on Teasel

This bee was alive, but not sure for how long.  Sorry out of focus!

A Cinnabar Moth caterpillar

Total walked:  4 miles

In the garden today:

I moved the bird feeder to the front in the hope that I might get more birds after seeing how many the people across the road have on theirs.  This way if we do get bird life I am more likely to see it than just from the kitchen window when it was out the back.  Hoping so anyway.

Gorgeous rose.

I did some strimming of the long grass and weeds in the orchard today and dug up some potatoes and beetroot.   I was a bit disappointed when I cooked the potatoes yesterday - they looked lovely, but they just seem to crumble up into nothing.  I thought the first time it happened it was because I boiled them too long, but I know that wasn't the case yesterday.

More beans also picked and also chard.

I'm a bit worried about how dry the ground is.

Large cracks are appearing in the garden, front and back.

  1. That rose is beautiful!
I wonder why your potatoes fell apart after you cooked them. I've had trouble with bought white potatoes having dark spots under the outer layer. I'm thinking I'll try red potatoes when these are gone.

  2. Is a Cormorant kind of like a NZ shag? Nice rose too, I'm waiting for mine to start blooming but it's a bit early yet.

    1. I think possibly, although they are two different birds here in the UK - this tells you a bit about them https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/cormorants-and-shags/

  3. The colour of the beautiful rose was a delight. I love this time of year when we start harvesting from the garden, a reward for all the hard work.

  4. Can I recommend Kestrel as a summer spud? My daughter grew them on her allotment and this year here, and they are super - good for everything except potato salad. (e.g. not a waxy potato).

    What a beautiful rose.
