Sewing Sunday

What a change in weather today from yesterday.  It was raining when I first woke up and then overcast the rest of the day and rather windy, so I stayed inside only braving the wind to feed the guinea pigs in the shed.

I worked on two mohair bears today.

A tiny one.

A slighter bigger on.

Making these bears is quite hard work, and by the time I had finished I realised, a little too late due to my stubbornness, that I had overdone the hand sewing as my right arm was giving me grief.  So will rest it for a few days now and resist the temptation to make more bears.

In the evening I thought I make a couple of fruit loaves while I had the AGA on.

They both came out with burnt tops!  They normally take 1 1/2 hours to cook, I put the timer on for an hour to check...and this was the result!  Sigh.  This AGA cooking is taking me a little time to get used to, probably because I need to spend more time reading up about it than just doing it!  I tasted a slight with the burnt top removed and it tastes good.  I'll put one loaf (cut in half) in the freezer and keep one out.

  1. Getting to know your oven was one thing that always took time after moving house - sometimes it seemed that I'd get all my recipe adjustments sorted out and then we would move again!

    1. The main thing is the lack of temperature control, it is all or nothing...which is good in some ways, but not others. I will get to grips with it eventually I am sure.

  2. I've never tried cooking with an AGA only with gas or electricity. I'm sure with scraping or cutting off the top it'll be fine.

    1. Yes, it is quite different from gas which is what I was used to. Cutting the top off is fine, the rest of the loaf is good (although I think it cooked too fast, as doesn't taste quite as good as normal)

  3. What a shame, it does take time to get to know a new cooker. Great bears, they are adorable.

    1. Sure does and for one person it is just too big really to learn to get to grips with properly. I need to experiment more, but think of the cost of putting it on for just one person!
