A Very Lovely Christmas Day

What a stunning morning to wake up to for Christmas Day

The sunrise just got better and better!

The day was just perfect weather wise.

I laid the table the night before.

Just as we were about to eat.

A smaller gathering than usual with just three of us, but feeling blessed that we could still celebrate together as with the advantages of technology we were able to connect with my older son, his wife and my mother in law and her partner.

Delicious food.

My 'traditional' desserts.

Fresh fruit salad

and pavlova of course - the first time I have ever made one in an AGA!

A late afternoon walk round the village to see the lights and decorations,  the sky greeted us with a beautiful sunset, the beauty of which I didn't manage to fully capture as I just had my pocket camera with me.

The conclusion was our house was the most colourful that we saw.

Hubby had worked hard putting up the lights, and I re-potted the 'Christmas' tree that I had dug up at the top of the garden in preparation for where the new summer house is going to be built next year.

A deluxe version of JRR Tolkein's 'Letters from Father Christmas'.   I have to admit to being a bit disappointed with the size of this, but it is still lovely.

My favourite Christmas gift from my husband, a Robin Rive (Made in NZ) Panda.

My wedding anniversary gift (from 21st December), a pretty pendant.

I hope everyone else had a lovely Christmas.

  1. Well that looks like a very very enjoyable Christmas Day. I've always been told that a pavlova is one of the hardest things to cook and a friend was bemoaning the fact that her Rayburn was not very good at it. So I'm gad to see that yours was an obvious success. All that fresh fruit salad too. Delicious. I don't know that Tolkien work at all. I hope the memory of this Christmas will keep you going to the next one.

    1. It was a lovely Christmas, helped by the weather of course, and still being able to talk to family (I even spoke to my Dad, Sister and BIL in NZ early in the morning as their Christmas dinner was drawing to a close) Yes I was really pleased the pavlova worked out, as I didn't have a 'practice' run. I only make it once a year - too much sugar to make on a regular basis, but a real treat at Christmas.

I used to read Letters to Father Christmas to my boys when they were little, and even wrote them letters in a similar vein, and they wrote back (I still have some of those letters). It is a lovely book, but the diminutive surprised me (especially considering the price!)

I hope you were able to have a good Christmas.

  2. The "pav" looks lovely. Glad you had a good Christmas. Let's hope 2021 is a great improvement on 2020.

  3. What a beautiful wedding anniversary pendant! I'm glad you had a nice day, and I think you did a fantastic job with decorating your pavlova :)

  4. Great Pav. I made my first ever this year. They had always seemed like some kind of alchemy when Mum made them. I notice your spiral wooden trivets - from NZ?

    1. Absolutely the trivets are from NZ - as many reminders of home as I can get. Miss NZ so much and my family. It doesn't look like I will be able to return to visit anytime soon. I usually go Feb/Mar each year, but missed this year for obvious reasons, and now it is looking highly unlikely that I will be able to go next year either. I'm allowed in being a NZ Citizen, but with all the health risks it is very concerning.

  5. I love how your table is set out, can't not have a pav aye? Our day was very quiet, my parents were here and we all relaxed in the sun.

    1. It just wouldn't be Christmas anymore without a Pav....not sure how many years I have been making one now, but a long time! So glad you were able to have your parents there. I miss mine so much.
